Fashion Revolution Presentation
The Objective:
As a Fashion Revolution ambassador, I was tasked with developing an event to advocate for sustainable efforts in the fashion industry. In honor of Fashion Revolution Week, I created a 45-minute slide deck for high school marketing students to educate them on the industry's unfortunate realities and encourage them to become more conscious consumers.
Skills, And Such
This presentation showed my passion for education amongst consumers so that their values better align with their spending habits
-
When talking to these high schoolers, I knew the importance of keeping the context digestible and relevant to them. Since they had a basic understanding, I applied the knowledge to their everyday life.
-
This 45 minute presentation was meant to be more conversational, so they felt more comfortable asking me more difficult questions without judgement.
-
From discussing natural vs. manmade cellulosic vs. synthetics to the cutting and sewing of a garment, I taught them all the critical steps that go into producing apparel…. shedding light onto all of the people that make it happen.
-
I organized data from various sources that are well respected and display honest realities within this multi-billion dollar industry
-
I ensured that at the end of the presentation they knew how to take a critical look at products before buying. I also provided ideas such as swapping, mending, thrifting, and upcycling.
-
I wanted to remain judgment-free, as this is a systemic issue and there are potential financial constraints that come into play.
Key takeaways…
As someone who has developed an extensive understanding of the fashion industry, I felt it was my responsibility to advocate for those who are actively making our clothes but do not have a voice.
I decided to take my skillset and voice them to 60 high schoolers since I know how developmental this time is for them. They are:
Getting their first job
developing a relationship with money
Finding their individual style
Consuming high levels of social media
My goal was to inspire them by giving them opportunities to make a meaningful impact. I was pleased with my impact and I even had a student reach out to me, to be a mentor for her AP Research project on fast fashion.
